Captain’s Log
Stardate: Unknown

The Enterprise has crossed the boundary of our galaxy into another, though we have not yet been able to determine just how far we were thrown. We are truly alone, cut off from Earth, from Starfleet, from any support. We had not planned this, but we shall continue our mission as set forth by the charter, to explore: to seek out new life and new civilizations, as best we can in the time we have left.

Many of our instruments were damaged or destroyed during the crossing. Scotty and his team are trying to bring all of our vital systems back online as we hunt for somewhere to either attempt repairs or possibly maroon ourselves and try to survive as best we can.

We’ve got long range sensors up, and we’ve found several Class M worlds that we are going to explore. We will need to start supplementing our supplies if we are going to be here for the long haul.

The transporter beam faded away, leaving the landing party standing in the middle of a large, dark, stale room. At least it was dark for a few moments, then the lights came on. Kirk turned a slow circle, his weapon out, looking around. The security forces had their weapons out as well.

“Captain, No life signs. There seem to be rooms overlooking this area,” Spock waved his tricorder and indicated a large stairway and a balcony overlooking the room they were in. The landing party looked up. Kirk waved to a security officer and one of the scientists they had brought along to go check it out. Two other security officers went to check the corridors leading off the room.

“Spock, what do you think this is?” Kirk went over to the large standing ring and touched a hand to the design carved into it. “Decoration? Ceremonial?”

“Difficult to say, sir. I will need to scan these images and see if I can decipher what their meaning might be,” the Vulcan scientist replied.

“What did you do!?!” The scientist on the stairs demanded of the security officer that was already on his way across the balcony towards the first room.

“I didn’t do anything! I just walked on the stairs, the same as you!”

The scientist barreled the rest of the way up, complaining every step of the way.

“I thought we agreed those two were not supposed to go on the same missions anymore,” Kirk muttered to Spock.

Spock took a few steps back and looked up at the Ring. “I did not believe you made that statement in seriousness after the last mission, Captain. For all their bickering, they do work well together.”

“See, right there!!! You touched it and it went on! Stop touching things!”

“Well then, you touch something.”

“I did.”

“And?”

“Nothing happened.”

“Because I’m special.”

“Quit grinning at me. You’re not special, you’re a morn.”

Kirk didn’t bother to turn and look, he just shouted, “Knock it off up there!”

“Sorry Captain!” two voices chimed in unison.

Kirk rolled his eyes as he heard a more subdued order, “Okay, touch that.”

“You said to stop touching stuff.”

“Now I’m telling you to touch it.”

“Would you make up your mind?!?”

“Sheppard, Lorne, come back to the control room, you have to stop turning things on, the city is reacting to you guys for some reason.”

“It likes us, Rodney,” Sheppard drawled, still annoyed that the scientists had swarmed in and tossed him out on his ear, sending him off with Lorne and Stackhouse to explore the deserted corridors.

There was a huff of annoyance. “Too much. The city has a shield; you guys are drawing power from it. The city is underwater. The shield is collapsing. Connect the dots, Lieutenant Smart Ass. Get back up here!”

“Lorne? McKay says we have to… Lorne? Hey, where’d you go? Stacks? Hey, you guys know the rules! No wandering off!”

There was a loud groaning noise, and despite himself, Sheppard felt a little spooked. It was eerie and dark and so green and musty here. And quiet, except for the weird noises. Something clanked and echoed, making him jump. He had his phaser out, set on stun. “Stackhouse! Lorne!”

Where had they gotten to?

He passed by a window and saw the green depths of the ocean and the expanse of this city for the first time, this underwater city. He saw the flash and spark of what had to be the shielding collapsing at the furthest edges.

“Rodney, is the city supposed to be underwater?” Sheppard barked into his communicator. His heart was racing; something was telling him this was all wrong. This was not how things should be. He felt the awareness of it pressing on him, urging him forward, leading him deeper into the corridors.

“It is underwater!” Rodney snapped. “How should I know what it should or shouldn’t be doing? I don’t speak this language and Uhura says it will take days to decipher even the basics.”

His hands were shaking as he touched his palms to the smooth surface of a door. Rightness. He felt a sense of rightness here. His fear began to subside a little as the door opened.

“Lieutenant, we have to book ass out of here!” Stackhouse grabbed Sheppard’s sleeve suddenly, holding him in place, keeping him from going in.

He wanted to go in. He needed to go in. “Sir? We’ve been calling you, sir?” Sheppard blinked and saw Lorne standing beside Stacks, looking at him with concern.

“In a minute. I need to do this one thing. I have to.” Sheppard pulled away and went into the room. The lights came up and he saw a chair in the middle of the room. He immediately went to it.

“Sir?” Lorne groaned, and said in his best, ‘I hate this plan’ voice, “Is this a good idea? Doctor McKay and Mister Spock ordered us back up.

Sheppard slid into the chair, running his hands over the armrests. “We’re leaving for good, we’re beaming out and we’ll never come back. I need to do this, Evan.”

With a long-suffering sigh, Lorne nodded. “Two minutes. Then out.”

The chair slid back and everything lighted up blue around him. He closed his eyes and the little insistent push grew more pronounced. “Orders. I think it wants orders,” Sheppard said to his companions as he started to comprehend some of the urgings.

“Order it to stop shutting down the shields!” Stackhouse said.

Lorne suggested, “Up. See if it will go up.”

Sheppard lifted his head and stared at Lorne. “Why would it go up?”

“It went down. It should go up. We saw walkways outside the windows; this city wasn’t meant to always be underwater.” Lorne shrugged.

Nodding, since it made sense, Sheppard sat back and thought about how to give the order to “go up” to this alien city. It seemed just the thought was enough; the city began to shake around them.

“Lieutenant Sheppard! Lieutenant Lorne! We need to go, you have to get up here, the Enterprise cannot get a lock on your life signs in order to beam you out.” Captain Kirk said over the communicator as Lorne flipped it open.

“Sir, have the scientists check the depth, is there any change in our positi…” Lorne wasn’t able to finish the question as the city moved violently and he and Stacks were thrown to the floor.

“Third floor, sporting goods! Fourth floor, toy department! Sixth floor, ladies ling-erie!” Sheppard called with a chuckle, thoroughly enjoying himself. He was inside the city’s interface, and it was like nothing he had ever experienced before. It was almost like flying.

When the city stopped moving, Sheppard forced himself to break away from the chair, promising that he’d be back soon. He had to go back in there. He pulled out his communicator. “So, Captain, I don’t think we need to panic about the city sinking anymore. And I think you need to come down and see what we found for yourself.”

“What did you touch, Sheppard?” he heard Rodney bark from somewhere in the background.

“Did you move us, Sheppard?” Kirk asked.

“Yes sir.”

“Give me one good reason why we should waste valuable time here in a deserted city with no resources when the Enterprise is in a decaying orbit and barely space worthy?”

“Because this isn’t just a city, sir. It’s a ship. It’s a star ship. And I think I can fly it.”
